Fear of the dentist is more common than you might think, with the Oral Health Foundation estimating it affects almost half of adults, and 12% suffering extreme phobia. But, it doesn’t have to be as awkward or embarrassing as you might think – after all, at our Hull dental practice, we treat nervous patients on a daily basis!

Of course, nerves can vary from person to person and while one patient may just feel a bit anxious, another can feel sick, shaky or utterly debilitated. So, our experts here at our Hull dental practice wanted to share some great tips for shaking off the nerves.

1) Choose wisely!

Unfamiliar and unwelcoming, cold and clinical – the dental practice itself can be a source of fear! Thankfully, here in Hull, it couldn’t be further from the truth. We aim to help our patients feel relaxed and at home from the moment they step through our doors, meaning treatment is an absolute breeze.

2) Phone a friend

Don’t forget that old lifeline – the friend or family member who can chaperone you! If you want to bring someone with you to your appointment, that’s totally fine with us*. Get in touch to see how we could help.

3) Make the most of your first appointment

If you’ve just signed onto our books or haven’t been for a while, make the most of your first appointment with us. It’s the perfect chance to break down that barrier and get to know each other a bit more, and we can talk you through a procedure ahead of booking you in for it. It can also be a chance to ‘work up’ to those more difficult treatments, such as root canals.

4) Be an early bird

Take advantage of quieter times of day where our dental practice is less busy, and our amazing staff have more time to sit and chat to you. Of course, an early appointment also means you get it over and done with quicker, leaving you free to get on with your day and focus on the things that really matter.

5) Just relax

Bring your phone or music with you for a distraction, and try not to focus on the treatment at hand. This can help you feel calm and relaxed.

6) Scope out our dental practice

Pop in ahead of your appointment and you may be able to meet your dentist and get to know our staff and set-up a bit more, helping you worry less on the day*.  You might even be able to book in person*.
